Your major does not define your career choice. Always spin it to your benefit. Inform employers about the skills you learned through your major, not the major itself. I tell people all the time that being an American history major requires me to do a lot of research and writing, and employers completely agree. If your senior thesis or other classes youâve taken relate to your career, donât be afraid to mention them. You can even put them on your resume under the âEducationâ section. Donât be afraid to reach out to people that can help you. There are many campus resources and alumni networks that recent grads and students donât take enough advantage of. If youâre still in school, start as early as possible. My college advisor once told me that the seniors at my school tend to not think seriously about jobs until their last semester, leading them to freak out during their last months in college. While there will always be lackadaisical students roaming around, some do take a ton of time searching for a job but end up with little to nothing. Therefore, make sure you learn how to effectively ask for help, reach out, and network. Many career centers still offer their assistance to graduates and can help you locate other alumni in your field that you can contact. If you choose to speak to an alumni, realize that they probably wonât give you a job. Still, these alumni are great sources of information on careers youâre interested in, so use them to figure out what youâre really getting into. Some might even set up an interview for you or pass your resume along to someone who has a job opening. Make sure to send a thank you card afterward. Theyâll be more willing to contact you if they have something suitable for you in the future and will be motivated to help another struggling student or graduate later on. Donât pass up opportunities (but donât settle for what will make you miserable). There are so many wonderful opportunities that people pass up because they think they wonât get anything out of them. But thereâs a reason why so many people say that you should take advantage of every opportunity you get. While Iâm not saying you should take all of them (you donât want to hate your job and end up jeopardizing your performance and well-being), at least consider all of them. People that seem lucky are really just those that take advantage of whatâs placed in front of them, and find a way to make it work for them in the long run. So you might have to start at a company or position that you think wonât help you get your dream job. But trust me; it can if you market it the right way. You can always spin things that you did during one job to make them seem applicable to another one, just like you can with your major. Realize that veering away your major, talking to people who canât outrightly give you a job, or taking a position at a place that isnât where you dreamed youâd be arenât bad things. In fact, they may benefit you much more in the long run, because youâll have learned how to maximize what you learned in college for the real world, practiced successful networking and perhaps discovered something that you thought wouldnât make you happy, but you may eventually come to adore. Heck, I hated American history before I had to take it to fulfill a college requirement.

In 1995 only 9% percent of American workers telecommuted, but in 2015 off-site workers increased to 37% In 2016, 43% of American workers reported they spend at least part of their week working remotely. It has been estimated that 50% of the U.S. workforce has job responsibilities that are compatible with working off-site at least occasionally and between 80% and 90% of the U.S. workforce reports it would like to work remotely at least part-time. The importance of appreciation in the workplaceDespite the evidence that appreciation is both desired and beneficial to both employees and businesses, not everyone likes to be shown appreciation in the same ways. We have found that identifying an individualâs preferred language of appreciation is key to âhit the markâ and not waste time and energy doing something not valued by the recipient. Determining what type of appreciation colleagues want can be discovered by having team members take an assessment to identify both their preferred language of appreciation, as well as the specific actions meaningful to them.Research and expertise have identified five languages of appreciation in the workplace: Words of Affirmation â" praise communicated orally or in writing Quality Time â" focused attention such as having individual time with your supervisor, âhanging outâ with coworkers, working together on a project Acts of Service â" helping coworkers troubleshoot or complete a time-sensitive project Tangible Gifts â" giving a small gift reflecting colleaguesâ food preferences, hobbies or interests Appropriate Physical Touch â" spontaneous celebration of a positive event such as a high five when a project is completed, fist bump upon reaching a breakthrough on a problem, or congratulatory handshake when a significant sale is made Differences in appreciation desired?We began to wonder if those individuals who were in long-distance work relationships desired to be shown appreciation in the same ways as employees who worked on-site. That is:Do employees who work remotely have different preferred languages of appreciation than those in the general workforce?To answer this question, we conducted a research study with more than 89,000 individuals who took two different versions of the Motivating By Appreciation Inventory: one for employees in long-distance work relationships and the general workplace version for employees who work in face-to-face settings. The results of the two employee groups then were compared (the full research study and results can be found in Strategic HR Review, 2018).How do remote employees like to be shown appreciation?Both groups preferred Words of Affirmation the most, Quality Time second most frequently, Acts of Service third, and Tangible Gifts the least. But we found that employees in long-distance work relationships chose Quality Time significantly more often than workers on-site. The majority of these switched from Words of Affirmation to Quality Time being their primary appreciation language (48% in general work settings to 38% for long-distance employees). So it is important for supervisors and colleagues to keep in mind that many remote employees value Quality Time with their colleagues more highly than those who work in face-to-face settings. Conversely, receiving some type of verbal praise, while still important to remote workers, is desired less often than in general work settings.The types of Quality Time that remote employees have suggested include keeping connected through video conferencing, including them in team meetings virtually and setting up times to talk about non-work related topics. From a practical perspective, the single most important lesson we have learned for effectively communicating appreciation to remote collea gues is that one must be more proactive than in face-to-face relationships. One of the biggest barriers to overcome in showing appreciation over a distance is the lack of opportunity for those short chance encounters that occur when colleagues work in the same location (in the break room, walking through the hallway, sitting together in the conference room waiting for a meeting to start). All of these provide the occasion to be able to chat for a few minutes, âcheck inâ and see how your colleague is doing. In long-distance work relationships, these events donât occur and need to be more frequently planned.Being valued by their supervisor and colleagues is important to those who work remotely, and communicating appreciation can be done effectively across a long distance.
